Slow Geodynamics and Fast Morphotectonics in the Far East Tethys

How can the sluggish, long-wavelength mantle convection be expressed by so many time and space scales of morphotectonic activity? To investigate these relationships, we explore Java-Banda subduction zone, where geodynamic records cluster. In far-East Tethys, exceptionally arcuate Banda zone circumscribes deepest oceanic basin on Earth, seismotectonic activity slices upper plate more efficiently than anywhere else, uncommonly vast expanses continents are flooded in Sundaland Northern Australia. By comparing numerical simulations dynamics to a set independent observations, reveal facets tectonic physiographic changes that sole docking Australian continent onto triggered. While flow remains slow at depth, intense activity, dynamic uplift subsidence profoundly rework physiography spatial scales. These results demonstrate modest disruption tempo may trigger manifold disturbances.
